The fire started at 3:13 a.m. at a home on 8th Street and 11th Avenue in Jacksonville, according to Jacksonville fire Lt. Gary Hammett. Hammett said he was uncertain what started the fire or how much of the home was destroyed. Jacksonville firefighters fought the blaze for two hours and 45 minutes, Hammett said.
The fire was still under investigation this afternoon, he said.
The home is owned by Dale Edwards, a Jacksonville police officer, according to a post on the Jacksonville Police Department’s Facebook page. Attempts to reach Jacksonville police chief Tommy Thompson today were unsuccessful.
The family was out of state during the fire and “are returning to find their house, belongings and automobiles destroyed,” the post stated.
Clothing and supplies for the Edwards can be donated at the Jacksonville Police Department.
