Mark Edwards' In My Opinion: Network good for SEC but not for us
In recent weeks, we’ve heard plenty about the SEC television network, which is supposed to kick off next year. We’ve heard all about how much more revenue it will generate for SEC schools. That’s wonderful … until we start thinking about who will pay that revenue. That’s right – you and me.

Alabama defensive lineman Josh Chapman holds up the Waterford crystal football after the Tide beat LSU 21-0 for the 2011 national championship. This is the crystal football that was broken later.
Mark Edwards' In My Opinion: Tide knows how to turn a profit on broken trophy
It’s the ultimate case of “if you broke it, someone else bought it.” According to published reports, Alabama auctioned off the 2011 national championship trophy broken by a player’s father. And got a reported $105,000 for it Sunday. Which is about three times it’s worth, if it never had been broken.

JSU softball: Season ends with regional loss
After a thrilling four-day run to an Ohio Valley Conference championship and a nail-biting loss to defending national champion Alabama, maybe Jacksonville State didn't have anything left. The Gamecocks' run in the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional ended quickly and decisively Saturday afternoon, falling 8-0 to South Carolina-Upstate in an elimination game.

Mark Edwards' In My Opinion: Feeling sorry for the Belmont Stakes
With Kentucky Derby winner Orb not winning the Preakness, it's easy to feel bad for the Belmont Stakes, which runs June 8. It's the third race of horse racing's so-called "Triple Crown," but what happens if the first two races have two different winners?

Mark Edwards' In My Opinion: Strikeouts are a pain, but they don't hurt ... much
It's always fun to be the guy who leads baseball in home runs, which is Atlanta's Justin Upton with 13, by the way. But it's fun to track the guys who strike out the most, too. It's interesting to think that a player can be good enough at everything else, his team seems willing to put up with all those times he connects with nothing but air.

Mark Edwards' In My Opinion: New Tide coach has lot in common with JSU's McGinnis
Thursday was spent in Tuscaloosa, where Alabama introduced a new women's basketball coach, Kristy Curry. About two hours later, there was another news conference, but this one was for Jacksonville State softball coach Jana McGinnis, as her team prepares to play in the Tuscaloosa Regional. If you didn't know otherwise, you'd swear they're the same person.

JSU softball: Gamecocks were ready for postseason chance
During the worst stretch of the year, Jacksonville State's softball team discovered how good it could be. It happened during the last three weeks of the regular season. That's when the Gamecocks lost seven of nine games but began putting themselves in the position they occupy now -- a first-round game in the Tuscaloosa Regional tonight against Alabama, the defending national champion.

New Alabama coach Kristy Curry spent seven seasons each as head coach at Purdue and Texas Tech.
Focus for new Tide women's hoops coach: attendance, recruiting
Alabama has a new women's basketball coach, Kristy Curry, and it's clear her job won't be limited to improving the win totals. That needs work for the Crimson Tide, which won 14 Southeastern Conference games in five years under former head coach Wendell Hudson. But Alabama athletics director Bill Battle is hoping Curry can create an atmosphere that improves attendance as well.

Alabama’s greatest linebacker? This shouldn’t be such a tough question. The answer should be Rolando McClain, who had more talent than anybody before him who wore crimson.

Mark Edwards' In My Opinion: Free Manti Te'o -- to speak with reporters
The Chargers seem willing to make pretty much any player on their roster available to reporters, even rookies, but Manti Te’o remains off-limits. You can talk to any player about anything, except the most interesting and newsworthy guy in a San Diego jersey.

Mark Edwards: Old 'jinx' doesn't sink JSU or its ace pitcher
I have no problem believing in the old Sports Illustrated jinx — it always seems as soon as a team hits the cover, it loses. There’s part of me that wonders if I write a story for the sports front page, am I dooming that particular team or athlete? I realize in my head what I write has nothing to do with how a team or player performs, but against all reason, my heart sometimes says otherwise.

Bob Stoops told reporters recently the Southeastern Conference isn't as strong as advertised.
Mark Edwards' In My Opinion: Stoops takes on SEC, but numbers say he's wrong
Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops questioned recently whether the Southeastern Conference really is the best football conference, basing much of his argument on the ability of the weakest teams. Stoops says his own Big 12 Conference has better teams at the bottom. While Alabama coach Nick Saban told AL.com on Thursday night he has better things to do than worry about what Stoops is saying, I apparently don't. Especially when sitting through rain delays at high school softball regional tournaments.

Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron is one-upping his coach by driving the pace car at today's Aaron's 499 race, and don't think he isn't letting Nick Saban know about it. Saban served as grand marshal at the race in 2009, but didn't get to drive. Denny Hamlin made his return to Sprint Cup racing today at Talladega Superspeedway even though he is suffering from a compressed fracture in his back. He remained in the car until the 22nd lap, when the race had its first first caution flag, following the blown engine of Trevor Bayne. That allowed Hamlin to go to the pit and come out of the car in favor of relief driver Brian Vickers.

It takes about as long to run one season of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series as it does to have a child — nine months. Drivers and their teams switch to a new location 36 times, although sometimes they hit a place twice in one season, including Talladega. It can’t be easy for the drivers, who have to deal with us reporters at every stop.
