Although White Plains was able to overcome its mental mistakes against second-ranked Good Hope to pick up a win over Straughn on Friday afternoon in the first round of the elimination bracket of the Class 3A state tournament, it was unable to overcome similar mistakes against seventh-ranked Saks on Saturday morning, falling 7-2.

Five days after winning the Class 3A state track and field championship, Piedmont’s team still is waiting for the realization to sink in. After all, it is something the Bulldogs have been motivated to do for three years.
Piedmont’s crown means its seniors will graduate with a state championship in their final year of high school. Their last state title came as freshmen, when they arrived on campus in time for a state championship season in football.

In Game 3 of its Class 4A state baseball quarterfinal series, Alexandria hit Ardmore ace pitcher Cody Reed the way it was unable to do in Game 1.
But the effort came up short Tuesday, as Alexandria saw its season end 4-3. Alexandria split two games in the best-of-three series Friday, falling to Reed in the opener.

Oxford opened the Class 6A, Area 13 softball tournament like the team that won a regular-season championship.
The Lady Yellow Jackets outperformed Gadsden City in every way Thursday in a 10-1 win. They collected 12 hits, and pitcher Jordyn Skinner allowed only three hits.

For Cade Bradley, it’s hard to argue he doesn’t do a lot for Piedmont sports. The senior is one of Piedmont’s few returning starters from the 2012 Class 3A state baseball runner-up team. He also started at quarterback this past fall for the football squad.
And as Piedmont (25-8) prepares to host Mars Hill Bible (28-15) in the 3A state quarterfinals Friday and Saturday, Bradley is a core member of the Bulldogs.

White Plains and Saks have played close games all year, and Tuesday night in the Class 3A, Area 8 softball tournament wasn’t any different.
White Plains won this one with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a 3-2 victory. It marked top-seeded White Plains’ third one-run win over Saks this season.

Alexandria pitcher Ethan Curvin simply picked up where Tanner Wells and Justin Whitley left off Friday night.
Curvin threw a six-hitter Saturday to beat Jacksonville 9-2 and lift Alexandria into the Class 4A quarterfinals. The victory clinched the best-of-three second-round series, one day after Wells and Whitley pitched Alexandria to a win in Game 2, avoiding elimination.

ALEXANDRIA — Alexandria's hitters gave solid backing to the strong pitching of Ethan Curvin today, as the Valley Cubs beat rival Jacksonville 9-2 in the deciding game of their second-round series in the Class 4A state baseball playoffs.
Curvin earned the win, throwing seven innings while allowing six hits and two unearned runs.
The Valley Cubs (25-11) were led by Justice Owens and Logan Doss, who each had two hits. Dalton Cobb and Doss each scored twice. The bulk of Alexandria’s runs came in the second and third innings when it combined to score eight times.

Jacksonville and Alexandria proved how evenly matched they are Friday.
The Golden Eagles and Valley Cubs split the first two games of the second round of the Class 4A baseball playoffs. Jacksonville won the first game 9-7 and Alexandria took the second 12-5. The final contest of the best-of-three series will be today at noon.

Oxford’s teamwork goes deeper than most.
While a softball game can be controlled by one strong pitcher, the Lady Yellow Jackets have the possibility of throwing more than one solid hurler at an opponent any night.
Deep pitching has helped Oxford win 21 games and the Class 6A, Area 13 regular-season championship. It marks the Yellow Jackets’ third straight area title. They’ll host the Area 13 tournament, beginning Thursday.
